NRM Programs
NRM Education supports Education for Sustainability through the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative-SA, Waterwatch SA and Weed Warriors SA.
Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative – SA
The Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI) is a partnership of the Australian Government, the States and Territories that seeks to support schools and their communities to become sustainable. The AuSSI involves participants in a whole-of-school approach, to explore through real-life learning experiences, improvements in a school’s management of resources and facilities including energy, waste, water, biodiversity, landscape design, products and materials. It also addresses associated social and financial issues. The Initiative’s vision is for all Australian schools and their communities to be sustainable.
Waterwatch
Waterwatch is a national water quality monitoring initiative established in 1992 through which people in the community become actively involved in protecting and managing local waterways and catchments. Waterwatch makes a unique contribution to natural resource management by collecting credible water quality data that NRM bodies use to identify need for on-ground works, as well as monitoring and evaluating their impact. Water quality data is collected using physical & chemical testing methods and also through the use of biological monitoring of aquatic macro-invertebrates, fish and wetland birds.
Weed Warriors
Weed Warriors is a national education and awareness program that challenges students both in and outside the classroom. Designed to engage students in Key Learning Areas through a hands-on approach, biological control agents are used as the vehicle to introduce weed studies into school curricula. Students raise biological control agents in the classroom and, while doing so, learn all about their life cycles and ecology. Students also learn about the impacts of weeds and different control techniques, before releasing the agents into local weed infestations.
